Abstract: Background Australian research has found that implementation of Midwifery Continuity of Care Models (MCC) is challenging especially in regional areas. Implementation of MCC requires support from key partners and robust evaluation at every step, a feedback loop that improves multidisciplinary communication to improve design and sustainable implementation of MCC models; ensuring they meet the needs of workforce, health service, women and communities. Aim The aim of this workshop is to offer strategies and tools to support staff interested in designing and implementing MCC, particularly in regional settings. Methods This workshop will use a strengths-based approach using Appreciative Inquiry activities, MCC Implementation tool kits and Accelerating Implementation Methodology to assist participants in identifying opportunities within their local context to build momentum towards implementing a MCC model. The workshop offers a step-by-step ‘how to’ guide for; rallying together key stakeholders, community engagement, attracting executive sponsorship, and supporting midwives with the transition into MCC ways of working. Results This workshop is designed to increase awareness and use of resources and tools for design and implementation, identifying key stakeholders, aligning with research and sharing the lived experiences of the presenting team - who have recently implemented MCC models across four regional maternity sites. The workshop covers an overview of essential strategies for engaging health services, improving communication between stakeholders, and realising strategies for fostering necessary partnerships for the successful implementation and sustainability of a MCC model. Conclusion Implementation and scale up of MCC is slow due to a number of reasons. This workshop was created to enable midwives to take on the challenge of implementing a MCC model, particularly in regional settings. A project lead is instrumental to ensuring vested interest from key stakeholders and the smooth transition of staff into these models. Tools and resources presented and completed during the workshop will assist with co-designing a model from its inception, which is key to the sustainability of MCC into the future.
